    a thought on tonight's Tyrant
taken on its own, that closing line from tonight's new episode is foreboding and worrisome. (i know power corrupts, but dang that was a quick leap to the Dark Side)

    Movie review: The Railroad Man
I saw The Railroad Man today.
(no closed captions, so i don't doubt I missed a fair amount)

I highly reccommend this movie. Just don't take small children to see it.

I can't say too much about this movie without either spoiling it for you, or accidentally misleading you as to what its about.
    {ie, i could say "what do you do when you want to help someone you love?"...but its about more than that. I could say "some people like trains"...and that's half the story, but not the half you think it is}

Just please, go see this movie. (based on a true story, and we get to see the real people at the end of the film)...and buy the DVD; I will.

I've seen two seasons of Vikings, and I never said "hey, the actress who portrays Lagertha looks familiar."

Today, I was watching some episodes of The Gates (which I saw long before ever seeing Vikings), and there on the guest cast was Kathryn Winnick.

and I said "wait a minute..."

    Spider-Man 2: oversight or genius?
it was a reasonably good film. I've heard that there are scenes not advisable for those with epilepsy.

(and contrary to what I've heard, the Electro scenes aren't as tacked-on as some assert - there *is* an arc and growth to the character)

The recently-released sequel film includes an aspect of biology few people think much about…(or think about much)

    Happy National Sibling Day
I know at least one person on my flist has a sibling.

And I know from growing up, that some people are honorary siblings. And others are all-but-siblings they're so close.

    Movie Rec & Review
Like the other Marvel films, its best to turn off one’s brain when going to see this movie. (otherwise you’ll be wondering how someone seemingly not on active duty, could be running around with equipment that probably cost as much as a helicopter)

Although its certainly rich with plot bunnies – among others, what caused the shift from Batroc the hired gun to Batroc the Leaper (fights the latest iteration of ‘Spiderman’ on tv)…and Read more...Collapse )

good effects, great acting, a plot that could've been better if they didn't go heavy-handed to overdo connections to the first Captain America. (some parts, like Peggy, were great - but most of themmm...)

    Movie Rec & Review
    Saw NOAH this evening.

It was good. (recognized more than a few extinct groups of mammals too - as will anyone who saw ICE AGE). I highly reccomend it to any and all.

Excellent interpretation of the “giants on the earth” passage (and what happens to six-winged beings of fire, when they volunteer to help)

Best performances of the film - Ham, and Noah’s wife. (do any traditions give her a name?)

Her words to Noah about forgiveness, justice, and what is just…could equally well be said from Sif to Loki (or vice versa?)

8:33 pm long and thanks for all the fish?
I have been informed that tomorrow (today in some parts) is Ragnarok.

yes, the Norse end of the worlds - all nine of them (Pluto?) - is 22 Febuary 2014. and i've no idea who did the math for that.

am now wondering how many people I scared away from the movie, by saying the flashbacks were to the mid-1900s. nearly all the movie is 1910s and 1920s.

addendum to my recc and review of "Savannah"
    the rest of the review

in that, I mentioned that actors Jaimie and Chiwetel had good scenes together.

their scenes would have been better, had they been longer, imho; but one takes what one can get.

    Movie review & rec: "Savannah"
When I first heard of this film & read its description, I thought "ah, a tale of having to decide between one's friend and one's love."

It's better than that. (though the are pulled by their loyalties, that is secondary to how this is a telling of a true tale; there are reminders here and there that not everyone is equal, though that is more in setting the scene)

    I give this 8/10 stars.

(whether despite or because of the flashbacks to the "present day" of the story - the mid-1900s - the film feels slightly meandering...which, as the main analogy is life on a river and relying upon a river, may be a good effect)

Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jaimie Alexander, Jim Caviezel, Hal Holbrook.

All the actors were in fine form. (Jaimie and Chiwetel didn't get as many scenes together as Jim did with either, but what they had, was quality)

There are a lot of lost chances in this film, directions it could easily have gone, avenues it could have explored...but set aside in favor of the story they were telling. But its a strong story, and one that is very well-acted.

    I highly recommend it.
