movie rec: The Tournament

starring Kelly Hu (as Lai Lai Zhen), Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle (as Father MacAvoy)

(if you're having trouble controling muses or voices, watch a good movie - yes, every now and then, they'll shout out "oooh!, Colby and Eli can help Rush and Alice with -" or something like that, but for the most part, it quiets them)

I won't lie, there's a lot of gunfire in this movie, and no small amount of blood but it spills either offscreen (focus on the gun) or blink-and-you-miss-it. (and the guns are not bottomless wells of bullets either - they do have to reload)

That said, I enjoyed the character development that Hu's Lai Lai Zhen and Carlyle's MacAvoy underwent. And Rhames' Joshua Harlow was focused on one goal, but for reasons that are understandable.

"I don't wanna go." "Why not?" "Well you didn't abandon me, so I'm not gonna abandon you."
*holds hands*

I remember watching the The Making Of for X-Men II, and they said that, because Kelly Hu has such flawless skin, they didn't want her healing ability to be a duplicate of The Wolverine's - so they made the wounds shed off her skin. Here, she has some scars, but they don't detract from her.

There was one moment I had my heart in my throat...but it was a twist I didn't see coming.

The ending itself made me incredably happy. I'm a happy Zhen/MacAvoy advocate.

And I won't lie: I whimpered at the final scene.
